Dear Guoxiong, Bin, and Zhanging,
Please accept my sincere condolences for the passing of Academician Ye and please send my best wishes and best regards to his family. Actually, I knew his son who worked at the University of Utah as a researcher and later became a professor at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho some 25 years ago.
I first became acquainted with Professor Ye (Yeh) when he visited GFDL in 1980 and during a number of international conferences in the 1980s. In particular, I developed a closer association with him in 1986 when Academician Zhou and I organized the Beijing International Radiation Symposium. Professor Ye was the Honorary Chair of the Symposium.
Additionally, I and a number of scientists (Eric Smith, Joost Businger…) participated in a land-surface interaction experiment in the western part of China in 1987-88. In fact, the name “HEIFE” was suggested by Eric and me. Although full US participation was unsuccessful due to the political environment at that time, I contributed to the calibration of radiometers that were used in the experiment.
I also remember that I received an Honorary Professorship from IAP in 8/2002 during which Professor Ye was Chair of the ceremony.
I have had many discussions and conversations with Professor Ye during a number of IUGG/IAMAS conferences and learned many things that were occurring in the Chinese meteorology community. Unfortunately, I hadn’t had the opportunity to communicate with Professor Ye during the last 10 years or so. However, I consider Professor Ye to be the Father of Meteorology in China and he is one of my heroes in meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
While we remember Professor Ye’s scientist contributions to the dynamic and thermodynamic impacts of the Tibetan Plateau on general circulations of the atmosphere and his profound influence on many Chinese and overseas-Chinese meteorologists and atmospheric physicists, I do hope that we the second generation will be able to strive for academic and research excellence and achieve greater international recognition to make Professor Ye proud.
Best regards, Kuo-Nan
