Abstract

The analysis of climate change and in particular of climate tipping points entails formidable theoretical as well as modeling challenges. In this seminar we will outline how some results on the thermodynamics of the climate system can be used to study accurately the climate response to parametric modulation such as that related to CO2 changes. Moreover, we will present a novel investigation of the Snowball-Snowfree multi stability of the climate system by analyzing the combined effect of changes to the atmospheric opacity and to the solar irradiance. We study the difference between the thermodynamical properties of the two co-existing states and interpret the climate transitions by looking at how the thermodynamical efficiency of the system changes when jumping from one state to the other. The methodology has relevance for general investigations of tipping points in the Earth's climate and for analyses of the habitable zone in planetary systems.
