Abstract:
In order to derive useful information about the carbon cycle and carbon fluxes, very high precision measurements of greenhouse gas concentrations are required. Current ground-based networks that are dedicated to greenhouse gas measurements are the Integrated Carbon Observing System (ICOS) focusing on in-situ surface CO2 measurements, and the Total Carbon Column Observing Network or TCCON, focusing on ground-based remote sensing measurements of the column-averaged dry air mole fraction of CO2, CH4, N2O, H2O and CO. Recent and current satellite missions that are making nadir observations of greenhouse gases are SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, OCO-2, and IASI. A new method for measuring in-situ vertical profiles of greenhouse gases is the Air core system that is still under development.
In this presentation, the involvement of the Infrared Observations team of the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy in the ground-based and satellite observations mentioned above, as well as in the Air core development, will be shown, and future plans will be discussed.
